The Mayor and Town Council members are elected to serve a two (2) year term. The Town of Georgetown's Election Day is held on the second (2nd) Saturday in May from 1 pm to 7 p.m.

The Municipal Election is conducted by a Board of Election consisting of an Inspector and two (2) Judges appointed by the Mayor of Georgetown with the concurrence of a majority of the members of the Town Council not later than the last regular meeting of the Town Council prior to the date of the election. The Board of Election shall determine who is and who is not lawfully entitled to vote at the Municipal Election, take reasonable steps to see that the law pertaining to the election receives compliance and for the purpose of counting the votes and certifying the result to the Town Council.

Nominations for Mayor or Town Council

Each candidate for Mayor and for Town Council member shall notify the Town Manager in writing of his/her candidacy. All notifications of candidacy shall be dated, signed by the candidate and witnessed by at least two (2) adult residents of the Town. All notifications of candidacy shall be filed in the office of the Town Manager no later than 5:00 p.m. on the fourth (4th) Friday in April. If such day is a legal holiday, notifications of candidacy shall be filed on the last business day immediately preceding the fourth Friday in April.

In the event that no person files for office for which an election is to be held, the incumbent shall be deemed to be reelected for a full term and it shall not be necessary to have an election.

Registering to Vote in Municipal Election

A person may register to vote in the municipal election at the office of the Town Manager, during the regular business hours, until the close of business on the last Friday in April prior to the date of the municipal election.

A person may register to vote if he or she turned 18 years of age on or before the date of the election and is a bona fide resident of the Town of Georgetown.
